Praziquantel, Pyrantel Pamoate and Febantel Tablets

COMPOSITION:

Each tablet contains :

Praziquantel   IP                      50mg

Pyrantel Pamoate   IP            144 mg

Febantel IP (Vet)                     150mg

PHARMACOLOGY

Defender Plus Tablets contain three active ingredients havingdifferent modes of action and spectra of activity. Praziquantel is activeagainst cestodes (tapeworms). Praziquantel is absorbed, metabolized in theliver and excreted in the bile. Upon entering the digestive tract from thebile, cestocidal activity is exhibited. Following exposure to praziquantel, thetapeworm loses its ability to resist digestion by the mammalian host. Becauseof this, whole tapeworms, including the scolices, are very rarely passed afteradministration of praziquantel. In many instances only disintegrated andpartially digested pieces of tapeworms will be seen in the stool. Themajorities of tapeworms are digested and are not found in the feces.

Pyrantel pamoate is active against hookworms and ascarids.Pyrantel Pamoate acts on the cholinergic receptors of the nematode resulting inspastic paralysis. Peristaltic action of the intestinal tract then eliminatesthe parasite.

Febantel is active against nematode parasites includingwhipworms. Febantel is rapidly absorbed and metabolized in the animal.

Available information suggests that the parasite’s energymetabolism is blocked, leading to energy exchange breakdown and inhibitedglucose uptake.

INDICATIONS:

Defender Plus Tablets are indicated for removal of Tapeworms (Dipylidiumcaninum, Taeniapisiformis, Echinococcusgranulosus andremoval and control of Echincoccusmultilocularis).For removal of Hookworms (Ancylostomacaninum, Uncinariastenocephala), Ascarids(Toxocaracanis, Toxascarisleonina)and Whipworms (Trichurisvulpis) in dogs.

DOSAGE ANDADMINISTRATION:

For oral administration only.

The tablets can be given directly to the dog or disguised infood. No starvation is needed before or after treatment.

- For routine control adult dogs should be treated every  month. For routine treatment a single dose isrecommended. In the event of heavy roundworm infestation a repeat dose shouldbe given after 14 days.

The recommended doserates are:

1 tablet per 10 kg bodyweight or as directed by theVeterinarian.

PREGNANCY ANDLACTATION:

-           Consult aVeterinary  before treating pregnant  bitches for roundworms.

-           The product may be used duringlactation.

-           Do notexceed recommended dose when treating    pregnantbitches.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS,WARNINGS:

Do not use simultaneously with piperazine compounds.

USER SAFETY:

In the interests of good hygiene, persons administering thetablets directly to the dog, or by adding them to the dog`s food, should washtheir hands afterwards.

ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY:

Any unused veterinary medicinal product or waste materialsderived from such veterinary medicinal product should be disposed of inaccordance with local requirements.

PRECAUTIONS:

Strict hygienic precautions should be taken when handlingdogs or feces suspected of harboring E.multilocularis. Infected dogs treated for the first time with Defender PlusTablets and dogs treated at intervals greater than 28 days may shed eggs in thefeces after treatment. The animal should be held in the clinic during thisinterval and all feces should be incinerated or autoclaved. If these proceduresare not possible, the eggs can be destroyed by soaking the feces in a sodiumhypochlorite (bleach) solution of 3.75% or greater. All areas where the animalwas maintained or in contact with should be thoroughly cleaned with sodiumhypochlorite and allowed to dry completely before reuse.

Defender Plus should be used alone and never combined withother de-worming medicine.

ADVERSE DRUG REACTIONS:

None reported. Vomiting was reported in some cases.
